Addressing Non-Compliance in Kids (SEN Kids)

As an educator, one significant challenge I’ve faced involves the non-compliance of learners, particularly those with special educational needs (SEN). This issue can be particularly daunting in an international school or unfamiliar setting. Recognizing the impact of culture on learning and teacher-learner relationships underscores the importance of open-mindedness. It is crucial to understand that each child is an individual deserving of respect.

In instances of non-compliance, educators may encounter frustration. However, it is essential to realize that the child may not be intentionally rude; rather, they might lack the motivation to comply with demands. Recently, I worked with a child who, when confronted with non-compliance, expressed concern by saying, “please don’t call the police.” This highlighted the child’s fear and discomfort, emphasizing the need for sensitivity.

Working with SEN kids or strong-willed children can be challenging, but resorting to threats or emotional trauma is not an acceptable solution. Love and empathy have proven to be powerful tools in my approach. Establishing a genuine connection with a child fosters a positive relationship, making it less likely for them to resist authority.

Another effective strategy involves presenting a more enticing incentive. For example, expecting a smooth transition from a playful environment to a math lesson may be unrealistic. Offering something more engaging than the playground can make the shift more appealing to the child.

Encouraging peer-led transitions is a commendable goal, as it fosters a supportive environment among students. Lastly, ensuring that students understand the significance of communication is crucial. Through consistent interactions and understanding, a child learns that when you ask to talk, it is a genuine invitation to address their needs.

It is disheartening to hear about educators resorting to threats against children who already find their environment complex. Let us promote a positive approach, emphasizing kindness and empathy. Remember, it is crucial to punish the behavior, not the child.
